Difference between the programs?
The course revision program is purely designed to bring students up to speed in terms of their knowledge of the new VCE Economics Study Design. The emphasis is on content knowledge rather than application of that knowledge to answer examination questions, which is the emphasis in both the exam preparation program and the workshop. Those students who believe that their understanding of the course is sound, may not feel the need to attend the course revision program, instead preferring to focus on application of that knowledge by attending the workshop and/or exam preparation program.
The exam preparation programs are presented via webinar and run for three hours (+30 min optional Q&A session) and will provide students with coverage of the key strategies to employ when preparing for the final examination. The lecturers will instruct students on how to apply their knowledge in the exam, which will include emphasis on the common errors to avoid, ‘tips and tricks’ to employ, and strategies to write concise responses. Like the course revision lectures, there is limited opportunity for questioning throughout the presentation, as the lecturers will seek to cover as much ground as possible. The optional 30 minute Q&A session at the conclusion of the lecture is the only time available for student input.
In contrast, the workshop is a full-day live catered event (9.15 – 4.15pm) that is designed to engage students in ‘hands on’ activities that help them to apply their knowledge in the final examination. Students will be guided through a step-by-step approach for structuring responses to challenging or possible questions. The workshop will provide students with numerous opportunities to put into practice the strategies learned throughout the day. The emphasis, therefore, is on engagement and interaction, with students encouraged to quiz and question the ‘experienced examiners’ about any concerns or issues they have in relation to the VCE Economics examination.
Each workshop will include the preparation of sample A+ responses as well as the analysis of those responses that lack sufficient detail or contain common mistakes. Participants will also be guided through a series of exercises to unpack the most difficult parts of the course as well as strategies to incorporate relevant and/or contemporary information into their responses.
